    could save that kind of cost was to do much of it ourselves. We hired movers at each end to load and unload, rented the truck ourselves, but it couldn't have cost much under 5 grand, and we did of course all the packing of possessions before and after.

    Trying to imagine how anyone with a sick partner could do that, I think the only way would be to sell most of your stuff and move a small truck for a few books and keepsakes.

    Lovely approach to national health. That and medical tourism, go to Mexico or Thailand or someplace the care is cheap enough as over a million Americans flee our country to do every year.

      and transit, ~$6500 and another $3500 for unloading.   Unpacked ourselves, probably a few boxes still unpacked.  Some stuff was already packed from a previous downsizing, but still too much stuff.
