I'm so sorry about your loss. It sound like this journey you are making with the "stuff" is a valuable part of saying good-bye to him. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.

It has done me so much good to read this and the many comments and learn that my husband and I are not "alone." I am the packrat of the two of us, but things are relative, and relative to much of what I have read here, I am really "minor league" when it comes to packratting. I come in for a lot of spouse criticism for what I do keep, though, and I have a few stashes that need serious attention when I retire - no time now.

We seem to have stopped accumulating stuff about the time the youngest kid moved out, so things are at least not getting worse. We have one basement room, my office, two closets and one side of the "guest" bedroom that need to be cleared out, and I am looking forward to tackling them. Somehow I don't think it is going to be very difficult to get rid of most of it. But I want to take my time and do it without haste or pressure.

clutter, and even the definition of clutter might be different. I haven't even thought about the music collection of records, tapes, and CDs for example. At some point I guess I might even try to sort them and figure out who in the family wants what and what to give away or keep. I'm saving those decisions until after I've finished tackling the clothes, which I think will take another several months.

It could be faster, of course, if I just grabbed everything and got rid of it, but that's not the way I want to do it. I am looking at each item, seeing what my kids want to use, what my brother might want, what I can freecycle, and then what to give away. It has become a hobby I guess. I'm okay as long as I do a little every day and don't give myself timetables I can't meet.
