      The donkey was adopted by Andrew Jackson during a campaign.  One of his rivals called him a "jackass," so in a brilliant  F.U. move, he turned around and put a donkey on his campaign posters, citing the "strong-willed" nature of the animal.  

      I believe that Nast did create the GOP elephant, though.

        turned a negative into his campaign symbol, gotta love that.   LOL!
