  •  They tell us to take it one day at a time (32+ / 0-)

but when I first started out that was waaaaaaay too long a period of time. I needed to break my day up into smaller more manageable chunks of time.

I got into the habit of starting my day by reading a few pages of the big book as I drank my morning coffee. Then off to work I went. At lunch time I'd read a few pages of the 12&12 as I ate my lunch. Then work the afternoon. I'm not much of a telephone person but if I needed to I'd occasionally make a phone call in the middle of the afternoon. Once the internet came around I had online groups and friend to contact instead.

Then after work it was either straight out of work to a meeting or home first to change and perhaps dinner and then a meeting. Whichever, I made sure I had a regular meeting to go to each night, sometimes two on Fridays, and sometimes 3 on the weekends. I needed to immerse myself in AA the same way I had been immersing myself in the bottle.

    And it worked.

Today I am free from alcohol. It doesn't and hasn't bothered me for many years. It takes time. It takes working the steps. It takes hard work. But it works. And it leads to a far better life then I could have possibly imagined.

If you ever need to talk and no one face to face is available to you please feel free to contact me. Online recovery was a HUGE part of my early recovery and some of the friendships built in those days remain strong and important to me today.

The bottom line though is that there is only one drink you need to be concerned about and that is the first one. And there is only one day you need concern yourself with not drinking and that is today. Wake up each morning and commit yourself to doing whatever it takes to not pick up that first drink today and the rest will take care of itself.
