AA "swallows all the alcohol rehab/treatment dollars?"

You do know that AA doesn't take outside contributions and that there is no fee for AA membership, don't you?

a problem with alcohol and you got in your car?  Yes, please then come talk to me about how you disagree that AA swallows rehab/treatment dollars.  Because you will take classes about you being an asshole for driving under the influence (true) AND you will do X hours of compulsory AA.

whatever the court says or does.
there is no one in the rooms that is under any obligation sign any forms.

there is no attendance taken.  there is no affiliation.   there is no two-way street between aa and any court, treatment center, etc.

      •  AA has no control over what the courts do. (6+ / 0-)

It has never solicited this behavior.  It does not charge anything for attendance at meetings.  What are we supposed to do?  Turn people away because the courts sent them?

Again - how does AA "swallow rehab/treatment dollars" when it charges nothing for membership?

        •  This is true (6+ / 0-)

In fact, if you get into a meeting with lots of oldtimers, many of them don't like the courts sending people to AA.

          •  We used to call for Court Card Holders (6+ / 0-)

at the beginning of our meetings and tell them if they wanted their cards signed , we would do it at the beginning of the meeting or the end. It was their choice to stay or go, and even then only so many meetings are "open" to the general public and many are "closed" or open only to those who identify as alcoholics.

We all carry a rock that is our troubles. When one first accepts the powerlessness of their control of booze it is the 1st step in learning how to Drop the Rock. It is amazing how much lighter our steps are without carrying that rock. I have dropped enough rocks in my yrs sober to pave a highway.
