  •  He is trying to tap into latent resentment - (8+ / 0-)

Brown is attempting to channel a potential voter's resentment against ANYONE they might personally consider to be: 1) "an outsider", or b) "historically inferior", or 3) "a beneficiary of some kind of affirmative action."

It's an attempt to turn current disappointment into actionable resentment and blame, and it takes many forms.

    "[They] stole our jobs."
"[They] moved in and ruined the neighborhood."
"[They] are lazy and don't want to work."
"[They] are stupid and don't deserve a chance."
"[They] are sinful people, deserving of God's wrath, [so you can go ahead and be plenty mad at them too].
"[They] are infiltrating our government; you should be afraid."

IMO it's not racism per se, but Scott Brown revealed that HE THINKS it is a race issue, when he asserted that he could tell, just by looking at her, that she didn't have any Native American heritage.

Two examples of the same strategy:

Groups that are appealing to right-wing Christian anger and paranoia against what the leaders call "latent Muslim violence" and "sleeper cells infiltrating government."

Some evangelical preachers, including leaders of some black churches, who are attempting to channel their members' anger against LGBT, into anger against Obama, by accusing Obama of only caring about LGBT people because "they have money" and Obama needed to raise money.
