The White House won't care about your sternly worded letters. Come November 7th, Obama's either a 3 month lame duck or a 51 month lame duck. Either way, he doesn't owe anyone a damn thing anymore.

Either you make him sweat now, and he publicly commits to protecting the entire New Deal, or you let him continue to slide around the hard questions until its too late. Come November 7th, the only thing he cares about is Legacy. And you can either make that vanity work for us, or work for him and the villagers.

Force him to commit to SS, and he can't backstab it without his becoming "Obama was the lier who said he would protect SS and then killed it". That'd be his Legacy, his page in The Footnotes Of History. He wouldn't do it. No politician would.

But if you let him skate, then he's free to do whatever he wants, including knifing SS. Then his Legacy gets to be "Obama was the Grand Compromiser, unafraid to stare his own party in the face in order To Get Things Done In Times Of Crisis". After that, it's smooth sailing, nothing but Clintonesque speech gigs with big checks, book sales, and the occasional diplomacy stunt in Landistan.

In 10 years everyone left in the party will be remembering his administration with tears of fondness welling in their eyes. The government will have shifted further right, and we'll be debating whether domestic drone attacks are okay all the time, or just when the suspect might have a weapon.

Would it not be be simpler, if the government simply dissolved the people and elected another? Bertolt Brecht

    •  He's already saying (0+ / 0-)

Social Security will never go to Wall Street and Medicare will never become Voucher Care, Not on his watch.  I realize he has NOT also said there will be no cuts to benefit levels to either program . . . and that is of course worrisome.  But I still don't want to risk the election by demoralizing our own side or independents about the prospect that 'both sides are just as bad'.

We're ALL better off when we're ALL better off!
