    and I really loathe hearing dittohead culture critics mindlessly claim that it jumped the shark.  The show had its inimitable "Classical" period, and its success is spottier today, but its humor is still routinely the most advanced on television.

    But beyond that, I'll always be grateful to the show for being a beacon of light in dark times.  In 2002, in the utter Bushian abyss, when the closest thing to criticism of the regime in mass media consisted of gentle chiding over Bush's linguistic malfunctions, the Simpsons showed this exchange in the episode "The Bart Wants What It Wants":

    (Principal Skinner breaks the window of a wealthy private school to steal supplies)

    Lisa: But Principal Skinner, that's stealing!

    Skinner: Pffft.  Welcome to Dick Cheney's America.
