Mitt Romney doesn't have to make sense, or have ideas, or be truthful, or "win" the debate on merits—he just has to stand under the hot lights, not get flop-sweat, and do something, anything that might make the audience feel like maybe he's not a gigantic ass after all. That'll be what counts as a victory to them.
People judge debates based exactly on this: physical presence, empathy, confidence.  NOT on their knowledge, or truthiness, or the number of logical fallacies or dodges in their responses.   This is a beauty contest, not a debate.

Fortunately for the home team, Romney sucks at this just as bad as he does with facts, but that doesn't change he fact that debates have little to do with actual debate and a lot to do with congeniality.

everyone needs to commit this to memory.  too many at dK continue to believe that command of the facts has something to do with "winning" debates.
