My support for a Democratic adminstration over a Republican adminstration notwithstanding, I believe that the most beneficial foreign policy is one that favors the use courts over the use of high explosives.

That being said, the attackers in this case are not (likely to be) US citizens and are not protected under the US Constitution.  They don't have a reasonable expectation of due process.  That doesn't mean that a drone strike that may or may not cause colateral damage is a good idea in the long run.  It just means that in an undeclared war the enemy doesn't get to expect any better treatment than they showed our Ambassador.

But in clear cut cases of attack/response I defer to my elected leaders because that is what I elected them for and is the very essense of representative democracy.

    •  Right. This isn't the tribal regions of Yemen... (4+ / 0-)

where the local government cannot or will not impose its authority and bring terrorists to justice.  This is a friendly country, with a democratic government that is trying to establish the rule of law.  The ideal situation would be for the Libyans to arrest and try these people, and our first option should be to back them up if they need our help.  We don't want to go bigfooting into Libya and undermine that nascent government's credibility.

If a military strike by us is the only option, then so be it, but we should try very hard to get a better outcome than that.

      •  agreed, but I doubt a drone will be used (0+ / 0-)

Most likely these guys are hanging around the streets of a city or village trying to expand their power. It would be nice to bring them to justice using a joint task force led by our special forces and Libyan police. Capture if possible and kill if not, or a combination of the two.

America could have chosen to be the worlds doctor, or grocer. We choose instead to be her policeman. pity
