  •  And especially when so much of the 'problem' (12+ / 0-)

is from long term weigh-cycling diets.

Yes, when girls in middle school start dieting there WILL be a large percentage who by the end of college will weigh more than they EVER would have if society hadn't given them the idea that convincing their bodies they were in starvation risk situations several times yearly was a Good Healthy Idea.

And then people who have been counting calories since they were thirteen. years. old. get called lazy and told Calories In Calories Out, Just COUNT CALORIES And You'll Lose Weight! as if they hadn't already been doing exactly that for years!

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.

    •  I've been dieting most of the time (4+ / 0-)

since I was 12. Then, it was my mother putting me on a diet "for my own good" and when there were treats for the family after dinner, everybody, including my mother, got some - except me. It's been forty fucking years and I am still compelled to diet, diet, diet, about 1200 calories a day intake on average. FOR YEARS. And do you know the only way I could lose weight? It was when my kidneys were failing and I couldn't keep much of anything down, for months. Then I lost weight. Two and a half years of Peritoneal Dialysis, using a catheter to fill my abdomen with dextrose-laden dialysate put 50 pounds on me. I got thirty of it off, nearly, while on home hemodialysis, but then I got a transplant, got stuck on prednisone for as many years as the transplant lasts and can't get off it (I have outright begged), and went through menopause.

I eat  healthy but low-calorie diet, drink one can of diet soda or less a day and never tough sugary soda, exercise by swimming five days a week, and can't lose weight to save my life. I could only lose weight while running a very grave risk of losing my life, in fact. Now I'm a fat middle-aged woman with a healthy transplant and I'd give anything to be a size 6.

Why are war casualty counts "American troops" and "others" but never "human beings"?

I read excerpts of an essay by one of these very hip mothers of a preschooler in Manhattan. She was keeping a food diary on her apparently normal 4-year-old daughter. "Susie went to a birthday party and ate a slice of pizza. She will have only cottage cheese for dinner tonight."

Before I started screaming profanities, before I started calling the mother ugly names, I remembered that she hated  her own body, certainly from her teens, most likely from childhood. Misogynistic ideals of feminine physical proportions were in the air all around her, in direct proportion to women's rising prominence and visibility in society.

Today, we have Rush Limbaugh calling the Obama daughters "fat" (when they're very slender). This prominent bully, spewing this vileness and hatred, pollutes the whole culture. There is no "right size" for a woman to be.

Whenever I come across a clothing advertiser who uses normal-size female models (e.g., American Apparel), I stop and write a note of thanks.

        •  American Apparel may use normal-sized models... (0+ / 0-)

...but based on the cut and fitof their clothes, those models are probably in a large. AA's xl fits a size 8-10. They're really no better than the rest.
