      it's along the lines of it being okay to be gay, but it being bullying for a homophobe to tell someone to stop [stereotypical gay behavior] or calling someone a slur.

      Again, not to equate but to compare, I don't have to be ashamed of me being a Christian or think there's anything wrong with my personal (quite liberal) faith to find words by conservative Christians claiming I'm wrong hurtful or words by some of the more outspoken and obnoxious atheists claiming I'm completely deluded harmful.

      If some kid decided to bully every one of his classmates who was born on a Tuesday, that would still be bullying even though no adult in his community would agree with him that there ought to be any stigma attached to being born on a Tuesday.

      You don't have to personally consider a trait you possess, inborn or acquired, wrong in order for words intended to point it out with cruelty to be harmful and/or degrading.
