  •  OK, but what is the object lesson. (1+ / 0-)

Mom had been forced to memorize passages etc. until she'd actually read entire old & new 3 times.  She said to look at it like parables to illustrate a point.  Why?  She was smart enough to realize it contradicted itself -- within the texts --- as peoples matured enough to consider next steps in growing faith.

Then I had a religion prof we nicknamed "Jungle Jim" for his tendency to dwell on the sexy parts to keep us interested while he showed us how different author's version sometimes followed each other and how words in the original languages could be mistranslated due to not having vowel etc.  Like was it Reed Sea(big marsh) or Red Sea  --  without changing the underlying point of the tale.

I'd had preachers who concluded "strange flesh" meant don't marry different races.  Now they rant the Sodom & Gomorrah sin was gay -- which is not consistent in context.  Turns out -- strange flesh --- also referred back then to sex partners you didn't OWN  --- once again a crime against another man's ownership of other humans.

Sorry --- I own myself --- so no biblical "family" for this female.

      Lot was a dick.

He turned away from the ways of his uncle Abraham and enjoyed the life of Sdom.  He set himself up as a righteous man when he was not - and fathered children on his daughters who became sometime enemies of the Jewish people as a result.

Yes, Rus came from the Moabites, but she was a ger and it's her merit to join the Jewish people that put her in the line of David, not Lot and his loser sexy times with his daughter.

So no, Lot didn't have the right to do that - and had he been a moral man as he had been taught by his uncle he would have spurned their advances and assured them they were not the only people on earth.

      Lot was a dick.

And we sail and we sail and we never see land, just the rum in the bottle and a pipe in my hand...
