  •  Recycling system problems (6+ / 0-)

Iron is not part of the recycling unit separations at the "dump" where I go. Mixed metals such as old electric motors have no separation, so I just store them until I can find a nearby place to dispose of them correctly. This is a minor annoyance for me, but maybe there is larger problem of not having enough options at recycling centers to capture more of the recyclable waste stream.

motors. If you take them apart and separate the copper windings from the rest, the copper will get a better price. (Not all windings are copper, though.)

With the rise in the price of metal, people are scrapping items that have been rusting in back yards peacefully for years. A sign of the times, I guess. People are short on money.

trash on the night before pickup is big around here and has been for about 20 years.  People used to get angry about all the "undesirables" scanning the neighborhood but we calmly pointed out the positives and the furor has died down.  We took an old cast iron tub to the recycling center and got 44$ for it.  It was a small one too.
