  •  a new level of responsibility: (10+ / 0-)

To the extent that we're able to influence the outside world, which appears to be growing, we gain a commensurate responsibility to maintain our credibility and extend that influence.

That doesn't mean staying away from all controversial topics, but it does mean providing enough background and explanation to make sense to new readers or those with totally convention-bound worldviews.

"Minus two votes for the Republican" equals "plus one vote for the Democrat." Arithmetic doesn't care about their feelings either!

To be honest, this is affecting me, not only at seeing, unexpectedly, that the Times quoted us, but that it did so as a central crux of the overall argument it was making.

It made me reflect on some of my more emotional, sarcastic, or confabulation-driven diaries (which account for roughly 60%, tone-wise, of what I write).  Or some of the headlines I've written, having adopted the site's de facto "Fuck You, We're Not Journalists" mojo.  Makes me think that perhaps I ought to think twice before I publish things or titles in the future.  Maybe I oughta peel back on the CAPS LOCKED titles.  Maybe we ought to be even more civil in how we phrase things in some of our most righteously indignant pieces.  Or maybe not.

But maybe there isn't anything wrong with growing up a little bit, as a site.
