But I know how this stuff works, inside and out.

And I have a bad attitude for those who gin up fear in their customers in order to extort money from them.

The only thing I use is a simple firewall/router that implements Network Address Translation (NAT) and blocks a few port numbers that I only use inside my own little network. Odds are good, if you have a cable, DSL, or wireless connection to the Internet, you already have this stuff. You can safely shut off everything else. More than one pair of suspenders is a waste.

I have about a dozen computers in-house, all connected to the Internet. I've never gotten a so-called virus, experienced a crash of any kind, and have never lost any information on any computer. I still have everything that's still useful that was on my original IBM PC from 1981.

My in-laws, in their mid-80's, don't know a computer from a toaster. They have an old Dell I salvaged from the trash bin. I installed only the base Windows and a few necessaries. And AOL. Yes, AOL

The only instruction I made sure they understood was to never, ever, double-click on any email attachment that anyone sends to them. Even from me.

No firewall, no router, no anti-virus stuff.

    They've never had a problem.

My Bil, OTOH, is hopeless. He knows everything. He believes everything that hints of scary. He has layers of paranoia-ware. His laptop take about an hour to start up. Really.

I'm glad you've gotten past the worst of it.

    •  Thanks for the reassurance (0+ / 0-)

I got a virus a couple of times - the last one - really nasty - came from going to Facebook, which is why I don't go there anymore and don't have an account.

I worry because I'm all over the internet looking at stuff as you can see from my diaries.  I stay with Earthlink as my ISP because they allow me to set my email inbox to only those in my address book.  Everything else goes in a separate folder which I check daily and very carefully before opening anything.

I did want something to prevent malware and spyware because I've had that, too, and it slowed my puters to a crawl.  And somethng to clean out my puter - all those temp files and stuff that even deleting browsing history doesn't eliminate.

I love the word you used - paranoia-ware - and, for the most part, it's true.  But it's not really paranoia if the bad guys really are after us.

      Thanks again.
