  •  My memories of Halloween are so good (8+ / 0-)

We had great fun, lots of running and laughing. Only a few houses in our neighborhood could give us anything other than one cellophane-wrapped hard candy each. A small sack and our pockets were all we needed to carry our loot.

Some of the roads were gravel and, of course, the nearest sidewalk was miles away.

A sheet with some holes cut in it? Jeez, you were pampered! There's no way we'd have cut holes in our thread-bare sheets. We had too much respect for what material things we did have.

The houses we went to were as generous with treats as they could afford to be. The adults who opened their doors didn't care how we were dressed, just as we didn't care that one piece of hard candy was all they had to give us.

Halloween wasn't about the haul or the hype. It was about running, and laughing, and having fun.
