not only discount the possibility that there is a vulnerability, but also TOTALLY MISS the OPPORTUNITY to turn that perceived too close to call horse-race into actual votes.

People thought that Kerry had it in 2004.  People I knew then did not go vote because they thought that it was covered - that he was going to win - they did not make the effort to vote and he did not win.

A bit of uncertainty about who might win can be turned into better results - if people are smart about using that in favor of GOTV for their candidate - instead of defensive about their candidate's chances and insist that they've got it covered.  The candidate can't cover an election - the voters do that for him or her.  Nothing wrong with supporters feeling a sense of urgency and relevance in an election.  It is when they are told that it is covered that often things don't go so well.

and in this case, we're mainly a temperature-gauge of liberalism for the MSM. We do little in the way of GOTV efforts compared with assisting media narratives, at least on a practical level.

So I agree with you completely in one context. In this one, I feel somewhat otherwise.

      •  people could write more GOTV diaries (3+ / 0-)

that might point the site in a better direction for you .... I agree that the Monday quarterbacking is kind of pointless - but I still find it interesting.

The GOTV diaries are also interesting - you get anecdotes of where the voters are at in different parts of the country.
