    From a moral or pragmatic perspective, it's not charity if it's required of you. It's not charity if you expect to get major benefits in return (i.e., continued membership in your church, an eternal afterlife, your own planet, sort of thing.) It's not charity if it only goes to people with whom you share close social ties.

    He may get the IRS deductions for those "contributions", but he gets no credit from me for being charitable.

    Let us all have the strength to see the humanity in our enemies, and the courage to let them see the humanity in ourselves.
