The trends have been the same among live-call cell phone pollsters and IVR landline only, so I left that discussion for a separate day. You are right that it could be a major problem this year instead of minor problem - but on the other hand, as cell phones proliferate through the older demographics, the problem may actually get better, not worse this year. We'll find out soon enough.

that as the older people in my family got cell phones, they used them as an emergency or secondary communication device. They would never think of getting rid of their land line and going cell-only, and keep their cell turned off when they are home "to save the battery."

Three years ago, most of my senior friends used their cell phones for emergencies only and maintained landlines. That has changed. Now fewer than a third of my senior friends have landlines. Even my 86 year old sister has gone cell-only.

My spouse and I still have a landline but it is doubtful we will much longer. I am never without my cell but our landline is unplugged nearly half the time. We've kept it this long only for emergency responders. Now that the 911 system in our area has been enhanced, we no longer have that concern.
