  •  Yes, we could have gotten a better headline (10+ / 0-)

How can Romney resume a campaign that he never suspended?

It would have been nice if they press had taken note that Romney said he was switching from campaign to 'relief' and then ran that sham of an event in Ohio.  It was almost beyond satire, running a 'relief' event in his most important swing state and collecting cans at a "Victory Rally."

Only perfect in the sense of what we could expect.

      •  In a sense, it's unfair (3+ / 0-)

CNN just ran an opinion piece about how people shouldn't be swayed to vote a certain way because of the emotions around a disaster.  In a sense, they're correct.  The country was completely blinkered by Bush strutting around in the wreckage of 9-11, for example.  And if we were running against an incumbent, we might bristle at the 'presidential' headlines the president inevitably gets right now.

But what the press ignores in these sudden uncharacteristic calls for objectivity is the actual meaning of the candidates relationship to the disaster.  We should focus very simply on the issues that a president can effect that are related to the disaster.

In other words, they should be talking about how Romney claimed he would gut FEMA and turn over disaster relief, somehow, to the states.  And that furthermore, it would be even better if it was privatized!

That's not just emotional politicking during a tragedy.  That's an important thing to consider because this isn't going to be the last tragedy.   Why aren't they asking about how we as a country handle this kind of thing under a President Romney?

        •  What people do in a situation like this (10+ / 0-)

          is very telling.

Obama told Christie to call him. Any time. Anything he could do to expedite things, cut through red tape, any strings he could pull, he'd do it.

Even though just a couple of days before, Christie was totally dissing the Pres. Didn't matter. Obama is the Pres of ALL the people, even the ones who don't support him.

FEMA was ready. Stuff was in place. Obama paid attention when the storm was predicted. And so did FEMA.

Romney? He didn't call the Dem govs. He didn't offer any serious help. He didn't ask anybody what they needed, and ignored what the various charities and agencies said they wanted. He just went looking for a photo op.

Just like Bush after Katrina. Except he doesn't have the pull to get a camera crew and set up a press conference in front of what's left of Atlantic City. Or in front of those flooded streets or burned out buildings in NYC. Because if he did, you KNOW that's exactly what he'd do.

And then he'd leave, and let them fend for themselves.

        •  You've laid out the reality perfectly. (1+ / 0-)

There are issues relating to the disaster where the candidates differ, and those are very important to discuss right now.
