  •  Restricting access to contraception also sways (1+ / 0-)

many women. I've even swayed some men by reminding them that preventing unintended pregnancy is something married couples do, too.

It's especially important since the wingnuts are succeeding at moving the argument away from whether insurance companies should be required to provide no-cost contraceptives to whether some forms of contraception, including the pill, should be banned altogether. That's why the whole "life begins at conception" myth is so dangerous. It leads to the kind of "preventing a fertilized ovum from becoming implanted in the uterine wall is murder" thinking that will try to get the pill outlawed.

The other effective way of talking about abortion and contraception is to say that many women who would never choose to have an abortion themselves aren't comfortable with imposing their beliefs on others by legislating away the right of other women to make their own choices. That works well with people who consider themselves libertarian. "You don't want anyone else telling you how to live your life, do you? Well, many others feel the same way. Some may want the same things you do and some will not but you all want to live your own lives without interference."

I'm a Democrat - I believe that government has a positive role to play in the lives of ordinary people.
