    peninsula, which is normally home to half a million people, who mostly come and go by mass transit.  

    The peninsula is normally serviced by buses and the subway. But the subway bridge was damaged so there's little/no effective mass transit out there.  They put all the trains away for safe keeping and it's been reported that the bridge will be out of service for awhile and so they are virtually cut off until MTA can deliver a crane and some subway cars by truck.
