  •  This is a non story...why is it on top of rec list (8+ / 0-)

Seriously, is there a problem with the algorithm??

It was a security thing, didn't affect many people, they got to go eventually.  Some over zealous, over-worked, under paid staffer was being snarky.

It's 2 days before the election day and things are getting increasingly nasty out there.  But don't we have better things we could be discussing?

    •  It might be a non story (4+ / 0-)

or not.  A lot of people here were dismissive of a video that was circulating with Romney going on about 47% of Americans before that video finally blew up in the corporate media.

It's good to be skeptical but it appears there were a few sources tweeting about this tonight and just saying "Security" doesn't actually explain not allowing people to leave an event.

Things are nasty out there.  Romney's campaign is nasty.  Exposing that is not trivial.  Let's see if there is followup from reporters who were there.

The 47% video that was released here was
          - posted as 14 clips in 14 diaries
          - diarist ignored requests to consolidate
          - clips were audio or blurred, not same video we saw later
          - clips were previously posted elsewhere under name "Rachel Maddow," and Maddow had to deny it was her
          - diarist kept replying "these will be everywhere in mainsteam media" but otherwise wouldn't interact

So please stop with the false narrative on the 47% videos.  What David Corn saw was not what we saw, and Corn was given the time to research them.  If the videos weren't true, that would make DK look bad.  In fact, we've got a misleading story on the rec list right now.

        •  My point (0+ / 0-)

was not to be automatically dismissive of this story.  Neither was I saying that we should jump and flail all over it like some people were doing here.  If a thing like this happened at an Obama rally the GOP press would have pumped it and the rest of the press would have wound up mentioning it and it would have stood as emblematic of the Obama campaign for a number of people in the final hours of the campaign.  It's a big deal that they have this advantage in media.  They can make mistakes that we cannot.  The blogs are one of the only means of trying to even up the huge institutional advantage they have in media.

I agree it's embarrassing when we fly off the handle on unsubstantiated stories.  The "Victory Vans" headline on the rec list this morning clearly should have been pulled back after people pointed out what is going on there.

But this story appeared to come from a couple of different sources and if the press had chosen to report it, it would have been a black eye for Romney on the day before the election.  It was worth shining a light on for a moment to see if anything substantial materialized.

      I don't think so

People had already waited hours in the bone-chilling cold for Romney who arrived late.  The temp was in the 40s with a wind chill that made it feel 10 degrees colder.

A large number of people wanted to leave and were detained by Romney security. No matter what the reason, it was a hardship for the families and individuals who chose to go and were kept in the cold against their will.

Do you honestly think that this would not be news if it had happened at an Obama rally?

    •  Who the fuck put you in charge? (8+ / 0-)

      1. It's an interesting story.
      2. The number of people affected isn't relevant to the fact that they weren't allowed to leave.
      3. The media reported it and the campaign is covering its ass.
      4. That staffer will be looking for a job tomorrow.
      5. The rest of the staff will be looking for jobs come Wednesday.

People leaving isn't a security matter. Being allowed to go "eventually" does not justify detaining people.

    •  No, it was not a security thing. Am I the only (1+ / 0-)

one who is sick of organizations blaming their incompetence and mean spiritedness on "security concerns"?  And ever since 9/11, people who should know better simply accept this lame fucking excuse.
