    My family pretty much the same, except even my dad changed his party affiliation to Independent several years before he died. When I was young, Republicans weren't crazy and they certainly didn't think they had a corner the market on religious faith.
    You younger people may find this hard to believe, but when I was in grade school, believing in the idea "I may disagree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it" was considered the hallmark of a real American. And I grew up in an area where I had never met anyone who didn't wear the I Like Ike button.
