  •  SemDem - it may be a lot of things (24+ / 0-)

but it is certainly not treason. Treason is the only crime that is outlined in the Constitution and it would be worthwhile for you to read it. Scott's antics may be illegal, but his actions meet NONE of the requirements to be deemed treason.

    •  May be? More like are definately. (7+ / 0-)

But you are right about the treason thing. Rick Scott should be locked up for fraud and graft and corruption. He would sell this country down the river for a nickle but that is not even to the standard laid down for treason.

    •  What word/phrase would you use instead? (2+ / 0-)

It very well may not be "treason" per the legal definition.

In a colloquial sense, however, it clearly is: Governor Scott is attempting to incrementally supplant the people of Florida as the governing authority in the state by quietly setting up an infrastructure by which the rights of selected groups of citizens are systematically violated.

It's an attempt at a "soft coup", if you will; while it's not the same as gathering an army and seizing control by force, it does move the state of Florida a shade away from democracy and toward authoritarianism.  In that sense, it's an act of treason -- the Governor was entrusted by the people to uphold democracy, and instead has undertaken to subvert it.

Yes, it's very unlikely that he'll be charged with any counts of treason if and when he is ever prosecuted, but since this is a diary and not an indictment, I'm not sure that it's an unreasonable term to use.

    •  fuck VCLib you're back for Scott now? shame (0+ / 0-)

fuck I get tired of your ass sticking up for the worst fucking GOPers EVERY fucking time. Have you ever heard of rhetoric or just venting about the shit your gooper friends do? Scott is a lowdown scumbag who is depriving our fellow citizens of their Constitutional right to vote. People like you who justify that ugly shit make me sick. I once called you out as the most subtle troll on dkos and now you're proving me right once again. Stick some treason up your ass, without voting rights there is no constitution and no fucking teason law. Get it?

Go lay down and let your pups suck or go back to redstate where you belong.

      •  cacamp - I am not supporting or defending (10+ / 0-)

Scott in any manner. All I am suggesting is not to misuse the term treason. Nothing more. Call it some other kind of illegal behavior, but it isn't treason.

      •  What a dispicable comment (6+ / 0-)

from someone who is utterly ignorant of the Constitution and law of the land.  There is only one legal definition of treason -- go find it.  Scott is not committing treason.

I am sick of words like treason and hero thrown around to the point of utter dilution of real meaning.

There are avenues, after the election for redress.  I suggest Floridians use them both with their own AG and the USAG.

        •  this is a blog not a court (0+ / 0-)

I took the diary as a non-legalese rant with some hyperbole, not a tretise on constitutional law, a rant. You maybe sick of rants or whatever I'm sick of the likes of Scoot trampling on people rights and I realize not everthing written by a layman isn't up to constitutional muster, sue me.

Then go find your barf bag you'll feel better.

          •  The point is that we're all upset about (4+ / 0-)

these extremist right-wingers and their getting away with illegal activities that effect so many people.

But, that doesn't give you carte blanche to accuse a poster here of being a supporter of those same extremists simply because they are informing the diarist that a legal term being used in the diary isn't appropriate for this case, even though others may be so.

        •  The AG is in with Scott.... The whole rights in (0+ / 0-)

Florida is a scam.  When Scott's henchmen throw veterans in private facitlities due to his hand in the cookie jar with federal funds helping to stop the vote. enough that those veterans cannot get out of those facilities on their free will and on top he is making money, his healthcare has a hand in the VA, mental health facilities, and 75 pleading 5th to Medicaid fraud and lately .... has influence over VISN, hides people that CDC has determined to be an outbreak possibility like TB, knock kids off medicaid and healthcare....it may not be treason but close enough to take him out and whip his ass before he goes to jail.

        •  That didn't work out so well in 2000 (0+ / 0-)

Even with a fairly liberal state supreme court.  That said, there is absolute truth in the old hockey adage that "100% of shots not taken don't go in".

The problem is that once the election is over, we forget about the crazy illegal shit that happened.  Especially if we WIN.  The attitude becomes "Yeah, that was all kinds of fucked up, but we won so it's all good."  Which is true... for exactly one electoral cycle when the same criminal BS starts up all over again.

Someone said in another (I think) thread that we need to be fighting just as hard on November 7 as we were on November 5, because what's happening in FL, OH, VA and any other swing state today will be happening again in 2014 (or even 2013 in some states).

I'll believe corporations are people when one comes home from Afghanistan in a body bag.
