  •  We retain land line, but also have cells (9+ / 0-)

We retain the land line for emergencies.

As Sandy demonstrated to cell phone only users, it is NOT a reliable strategy. The copper wiring plant of cell phones is. Power is supplied from the central office. It is not dependent on the electrical grid.

But we carry cells when we are away from the house.

We just installed a new home security system after a rash of burglaries in the neighborhood.

We went with a company that does cellular, and so is not dependent on land line which can be cut easily outside the house. The control panel is sitting on a UPS that will keep it running in case of power failure in the house. So the only failure point will be if cell service at the towers or providers goes down. It was a decision based on vulnerability of land lines to physical attack at the home.
