yet,  This is going to create massive disruptions on the island (and among PR's here in the states).

Obama has already stated that he would support whatever solution Puerto Ricans decide for themselves but the devil is in the details.

By law, Puerto Rico must now formally petition for Statehood. Puerto Ricans already have decided for themselves, yesterday. It is encouraging that, although only 53% of all the voters wanted a status change, fully 63% of that same total of voters opted for statehood. If those numbers were reversed, there would be a big sociological problem, though not a legal one.

The sticking point after those number totals would be if either party decided they didn't need any more brown people. As it is, both parties now understand their only future lies in 'embracing' the fastest-growing demographic. PR will become a state, and it will require the statehood of PR to force the GOP's hand on DC statehood.

        •  Oh, you're so right. This is a mess. After reading (0+ / 0-)

that diary I'm thinking more like 8 years than less than 4. I had also forgotten the buzz among some of my friends (both in greater Cleveland and in NYC) when Fortuno first announced this referendum. Republicans. I shouldn't need the reminder, but apparently I still did. Black or brown or white, gay or straight, if they call themselves Republicans I should carefully examine everything they offer, from the end of a long spoon.

      •  My apologies, Professor. I misspoke on this. (0+ / 0-)

        Stating this

By law, Puerto Rico must now formally petition for Statehood.
was incorrect. That sentence overlooks the fact that the two-part referendum was non-binding on the government of Puerto Rico. I still think they'll feel compelled to apply for statehood, because that number differential and the current political climate indicates this is the time to go for it, but they aren't required by law to do so. Bear in mind, though; if they fail to try now, the next referendum would probably be a binding one and wouldn't be a two-parter, which would make many of the 47% against status change less accommodating.
