Real, classical conservative principles, in many many ways, would have resonated with the American people.

    - no corporate welfare

    - real tax breaks for real small businesses/entrepreneurs

    - keeping established systems which have been in place for a long time without radical change (notably: accepting Roe v. Wade as stare decisis, treating Social Security as sacrosanct)

    - downsizing the military so that it is properly used as an instrument of last-resort national defense

Now, I'm not saying classical conservatism would have given us everything we want.  It would not support universal healthcare (not until that system had been in place for a long time and working fine), and it would not support gay marriage (ditto).

But I am saying that, gee, if the Republicans really touted conservatism and not this crazy anti-woman anti-life anti-science anti-government psychosis of theirs, I bet they'd have convinced a lot more people and this morning's conversation could be a lot different.

When the RW pundits whine "He wasn't conservative enough to win!" I think they're actually right -- just not in the way they think they are.
