  •  Sort of OT, a sad "I've had that same shock" (7+ / 0-)

Last year. I'm against the death penalty (& the whole "New Jim Crow" INjustice system).

Illinois is a state that has abolished DP. I kept going to Troy Davis protests. I didn't organize, but I've sent several small donations to support Campaign to End the Death Penalty.

I was so convinced he wouldn't be executed. Whatever happened or didn't happen, 20 years later he was not the same person and didn't deserve to die. No one deserves to die that way, or be in solitary without appeal, or die for lack of medical insurance, or be killed by a drone, etc etc

I was so convinced that by making enough protest we could save his life. It was the right thing to do.

I walked around like a zombie the rest of the week. It was a long time for my world view to shift to comprehend that Georgia did it anyway.

Giving birth (giving life) should be a gift not an obligation or women and poor people are 2nd class by definition

    •  The arc of justice is long (6+ / 0-)

some day this barbaric practice will end.
Thanks for your work on this.

I love it that Obama's channeling Harry Truman: "I don't give 'em hell; I just tell the truth and they think it's hell!"

For once almost all the ballot props went my way.  This is one of the two that didn't.  Maybe next time.

      •  Not "unfortunately" IMO - CEDP & Death Row against (1+ / 0-)

Campaign to End the Death Penalty (CEDP) wrote to all on death row & only 1 or 2 were in favor of it passing.

Two problems with the measure, approximating the CEDP statement:

        1) as a ballot measure, it's harder to revise than legislation, and it needs revising.

        2) it mandates the money savings going to police & investigation, taking funds away from appeal process. LWOP is a slow death sentence, especially if the prisoner is put in solitary. Also, LWOP aren't eligible for the limited education & several other programs since they'll never get out, they don't "need" job training.

I'm glad it didn't pass, it was a stealth "law & order" measure.
