  •  As a white guy... (10+ / 0-)

...I'm sorry that it has to turn out like this.  I'm very disappointed in my generation of white guys--it seemed we were a different thing, and for a while a lot of us were, but then most of us, it seems, simply submitted to the path laid out for us.  Well, I guess we're not young any more.  Hey, they say people get more conservative as they get older--guess I'm supposed to be getting more conservative now...  Haircut?  Check!  Bowling shirt?  Check!  Khakis?  Check!  John Birch Society politics?  Check!  But hey, I can keep my rock'n'roll soundtrack, and that's what really matters, right?  All I can say to that is "Sez who??"  But I guess there are a lot of other-directed people out there, with Madison Avenue and Hollywood there to lead the way to "just like our parents" status.

What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that I think lots of white guys are conservative because they've been led to believe it's their job--their prescribed role in society, acceptance of which is a sign of maturity (!).  The idea that they don't have to accept that role doesn't seem to occur to them.

The '60s were simply an attempt to get the 21st Century started early....Well, what are we waiting for? There's no deadline on a dream!

I'm glad not to be in the Traditional White Guy Party.  I'm not sorry to be in the Not Just White Guys Party, I'm sorry my generation of white guys didn't come through along with everyone else.
