    ... on a few occasions back when she was a CA state senator. I was a software consultant with the group that wrote the software used when the senators voted on legislation on the senate floor. To her I would have been some mostly anonymous tech support guy (what many other senators would have seen as "the help") but she always treated me with a great deal of respect.

    I vaguely recall a brief conversation with her in which she was asking me and another consultant about voting software and security. She was very interested in the topic back then (this would have been in the late 90s). I don't remember details of the conversation. All these years later what I remember is that she had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the room when she was listening to you.

      well before running for office.  Which is to say, it was important to her... vs. someone who's running for office with the idea of what's in it for them later.
