  •  But once he stopped being a DEMOCRAT... (5+ / 0-)

...they should have kicked him to the curb. Once the Dems saw he was the choice of REPUBLICANS and not their own party...that's when power should have been taken away.

You make a good point, but no one Senator should or actually DOES have the power that the rest of an entire Party could not inhibit. Unless they LIKED the crap he foisted on the rest of us...?

    •  I think you missed my earlier point (0+ / 0-)

The power in the Senate has relatively little to do with party, and is not institutionally-driven.  Ted Kennedy was one of the "key Senators" for decades — including a great many years in the late 90s and early 00s when Democrats were a feckless minority in the Senate.  That didn't cut into Kennedy's power one whit.  His power was not founded on institutional arrangements, but on his own dealings over an entire political career, and an ability to pull strings seemingly far removed from his Senate domain.

Your comment assumes that it's the majority caucus that actually has the power. In truth, the party caucuses are run by the eminence grises.  The power these men (and they are all men) have over other Senators comes from multiple sources. The "party leaders" couldn't kick Lieberman out of the caucus — his hold over them has been broader than any authority in the official Senate "leadership".

    •  Or to put it another way... (0+ / 0-)

The "Democratic leadership" wasn't about to strip Joe Lieberman of anything.  Joe Lieberman was "the leadership" of the Senate.  He controlled the caucus, not the other way around.
