  •  Texas goes swing, the GOP is electorally finished (10+ / 0-)

Of the top eight states as EVs go, the Democrats have three of them utterly locked down (California, New York, Illinois) and two that, while not locks, are pretty solidly for them (Michigan, Pennsylvania). Ohio and Florida, the two "swing" states, have now gone Democratic in two straight elections and demographics in both states do not favor the GOP. That leaves only Texas as solidly GOP among the big states. If that turns into a purple state, the GOP is absolutely screwed.

I know the Castro brothers are good for San Antonio, but I also have relatives in Texas who tell me there are a lot of Hispanic Republicans.  The demographics in Texas may change--without much change in the "God, guns and gays" mentality.

I just don't see how Texas becomes a swing state.  Hope I'm wrong!

this week's results in Starr, Webb, Zavala, Hidalgo, and Jim Hogg Counties, to test your theory of "...a lot of Hispanic Republicans" in Texas. I picked those counties because they are over 90% Tex-Mex demographically (the SOS does not report results by race), and include both rural and urban counties. Romney averaged in the low to mid 20%.

That's not a lot of Texas Hispanic Republicans. Indeed, it rivals the percentage of San Francisco, NYC and Denver Republicans.

What's still a lot are the white-right Texas voters who voted against Obama in the opposite extreme. But the demographics will take care of this -- inexorably, as well shown in the diary.

Mexican Americans in Texas who like guns and church and hate abortion. They may be mostly Democrats but not all that liberal on a lot of issues. Still, I do think the trend is not good for the GOP.
