  •  Same here (4+ / 0-)

I considered myself a Marxist in the 1980s, then became a Moderate in the 1990s, and since the days of Bush v. Gore have been continually gravitating back to the Left. Have even begone to think about Marx again recently.

I think it's entirely possible to accept Marx's critique of capitalism without buying into his suggested solution (communism).

If you read Capital Vol. 1 without having read the Manifesto, you'd get the impression that what Marx wanted was self-employment and cottage industry.  Frankly, I think most libertarians would agree with the end, if not the means.

To believe that markets determine value is to believe that milk comes from plastic bottles. Bromley (1985)

      •  Actually, all it really takes (2+ / 0-)

to satisfy most of the criteria of a free society is a well-regulated market economy with a reliable social safety net and democratic control over the means of production, i.e., the corporations. Of course, we never figured out how to do that third part - the democratization of the economy - and have lost a lot of ground on the first one, the regulation of the economy, over the last 40 years.
