  •  Case in point: my parents (14+ / 0-)

As near as I can tell, my parents were entirely unconscious of their surroundings in the 60's. I didn't even know the 60's had happened until I was a teenager and started reading (voraciously) about them.

My father started conservative and still is. My mother, while basically liberal, is politically unengaged and is totally comfortable about voting for Blue Dogs. (Thankfully, she'd never vote for a Republican.) Most of their peers are the same type, and so far as I can tell, they're not all that unusual as far as their generation goes.

The hippies and the political radicals were a loud and unprecedented minority in a generation that was otherwise only marginally more liberal than their parents. It used to drive me nuts that I couldn't get my kid interested in the upheavals of the 60's, but now I realize that's because the "radical" beliefs of the 60's boomer fringe are mainstream beliefs in her generation. That gives me a lot of hope for the future. If we can successfully fight a rearguard action against the conservative remnant, the kids will do just fine.

And the bright side of the downward thermodynamic spiral is, um...
