  •  The voting youth of Reagan/Bush the Elder, (12+ / 0-)

those who first voted in 1980, 1984 and 1988, were born from 1962 to 1970.  That basically comprises the 40-49 demographic that inexplicably voted for Romney despite its retrograde social policy and promise to dismantle Social Security and Medicare.  (I think of them as the "Alex Keating" demographic, the young conservative played by Michael J. Fox from "Family Ties", which coincidentally ran from 1982-1989.)

The fact that our voting culture in those years was Reaganist/reactionary I think somewhat accounts for today's 40-49 year olds' susceptibility to the trickle-down, government-mistrusting garbage that era spawned, as Tuesday's results show.

I buy the thesis that the political culture of first-time presidential voters shapes their vote later in life.  It doesn't quite hold for FDR (21-year-old) first-timers in 1932 and 1936 (who synch up with Ike) but it does for 1940 and 1944 (who voted for Kennedy and Johnson).  And first-time voters for Clinton in 1992 fall in the cohort that voted mostly for Obama this year.  Hopefullly this carries through to 2016.
