Congrats Tracy on your hard work and on being the recipient of such a great gift - I think we all appreciate everything you do, whether it's phone banking or writing great diaries.

You are the first person I clicked to "follow" here on DK.  I'd been a lurker for years, finally signed up back in October 2008, right before the election, so I could post a comment.

Never dared post anything else, until I started reading your diaries.

And then I desperately wanted to post a picture of the despicable billboard near my house and you walked me through it.

When I got brave enough to post my first little diary, you were the person I messaged to let you know I had gotten brave :)  And then I saw all the phone banking you were doing and you talked about how much fun it was and you made me brave there, too.

I only did about 350 calls these last 3 weeks - I did a lot of Dashboard, because after work I was too tired to go anywhere, but last weekend the President was here and he said if each of us made just 1 call, that would be 20,000 more people we could get to the polls.

Like you, living in Florida, I know that EVERY vote matters.  I shared the 537 ad on my FB page every morning to remind people.  So Sunday night, after I got home from seeing the President, I emailed my boss and said I was taking Tuesday off.  Then I found the local OFA office and signed up for election day shifts.  Another volunteer called me early Tuesday and told me where to go where a big phone bank was set up - I was scared because I had only done my phoning from home.  But everybody there was friendly and helpful.   I didn't have one of the auto dialers, so I did regular dialing with packs of lists for my town.

I made 240 phone calls, spoke to about 50 real live people, left over 120 messages on voicemails and updated the lists I was using to show disconnects or people who had answered whose name was different than the list, so we'd know who had that phone number now.

By 3:30 I was losing my voice and the afternoon shifts were coming in.  I was starving and a little dizzy - not sure if was from hunger or euphoria :)  So I came home, but before I went in the house, I walked up to the corner and came back door knocking to be sure my neighbors had gone to vote - nobody had the blue canvassing stickers, so I wasn't sure if anybody had gotten to our block yet (apparently we were short on canvassers at the last minute - but our area is pretty blue so maybe they knew who had already voted).  All but one of them had and he was headed out to get in line.

Came home, ate a sandwich and sat down to write my 3rd diary about my day phone banking (and the one that you posted to the Spotlight - I was floored - so many nice people wrote replies and shared their stories!  I love that!)

Then I joined the rest of the country, watching and waiting, trying to keep up with the DK live blogging.  And bursting into tears a little after 11 pm.

Because people like us "built that."  Just ordinary people who give a darn about where our country will go.  Just ordinary people who see our President being HUMAN and think - I wanna be just like him.

Some of us built a lot, like you, and some of us built a little, like me.  But the President is on target when he says "We're all in this together."  We are.  We are.  And I'm so glad to be here together with folks like YOU!

I'm with you - next up, getting rid of Governor Voldemort.  Gonna try to find out if there is a south Florida group among the OFA folks who live here who are setting up to work on getting a better governor that we can get behind (lots of rumors about Charlie Christ - not sure how that will go, but he was a helluvalot better than Scott).  It would be nice to get a true democrat and also some great dems for the state house.

I plan to take a long nap this weekend, catch up on the things I've neglected the last 2 weeks (standing in line for 9 hours to see the President on Sunday was the BEST waste of time ever!) and then start gearing up for 2014 and mid-terms.  Make Florida more democratic, work on getting more dems in the US House.

Thank you again, so much, for your hard work AND your inspiration!

    •  Wow! I can't begin to tell you how (0+ / 0-)

much reading that made me smile. Knowing that something I wrote convinced you to get involved means a lot. First, I have to tell you that I was not the one who put your diary in the Community Spotlight. It was one of the rescue rangers, pico, who did that.

Keep an eye out for Pam Iorio. She was the mayor of Tampa, and before that the Supervisor of Elections for Hillsborough County. She's offering to set up a non-partisan board to work to fix our broken system here in Florida. Some people think she is also thinking about running for Governor of Florida in 2014.

      Please keep writing diaries!

Man, there is still so much I don't know about finding my way around DK.

Everybody keeps talking about the upgrade to DK4 and I read Kos' diary last night about things coming down the road.

I can't tell the difference, but maybe that's because I was a lurker before 2008 and a very infrequent commenter until this year.

I will have to go send a note to Pico the Rescue Ranger :)

Thanks for letting me know about that AND about Pam Iorio.  I'm going to look her up and also see if our local Democratic Club in Broward is worth looking into or if there is some outreach program through Debbie Wasserman Schultz's office, since she's my rep - we need our congressional reps and our state reps to get together with regular citizens to help fix this mess.
