  •  The Cubans were mostly the wealthy (13+ / 0-)

That were run out of Cuba by the working people who were tired of being exploited and harmed by the wealthy. They were not the same culture as the working people, most of whom stayed in Cuba.

The Mexicans and South Americans are different, in that they haven't been run out of their countries by the working people, so they are more likely to be actual working people.

    •  also mostly whiter (7+ / 0-)

In Cuba (as elsewhere in Latin America), whiteness correlates somewhat with social class. The people who left in the 1960s were wealthier and whiter than average. People who left in the Mariel boatlift and more recently are much more mixed. And those who stayed in Cuba are also much more mixed race.

And the whiter Cubans are sometimes pretty racist, even my close friends who still live there. I love them, I grieve for the damage they suffered in Hurricane Sandy, but I cringe at their jokes and offhand comments.

      •  This is true. (8+ / 0-)

My brother was so upset the other day, we live in Miami, he was in line at the grocery store, and two cubans behind him (usually we can tell they are cuban by their spanish, hispanics all have different pronounciations depending on what country they are from), and they made a comment about how expensive everything was because of "el negro ese", which means "that black guy". My brother (we are both Argentinean, and in all honestly, there are a lot of racist Argentinians as well) gave them a nasty look, and they went off somewhere else.

Anyway, I see it more in the older Cuban generation. The young cubans are so much assimilated here in South Florida, they may as well be american. And like I said in other comments, they voted for Obama more than Romney. We hispanics (including Cubans) are just like the rest of America, we are younger and more inclusive, maybe even more so than the rest of American at this point. If the GOP thinks they still have their grasp on the Cuban community, they are sadly mistaken....

      •  Yes, they have some of that "Noble" blood in them (1+ / 0-)

The discarded "extra" nobility from Europe settled in the Caribbean, ruling ruthlessly over the native populations and the imported black slaves.

They spread into the US south, to contaminate that area with their plantation/feudal mentality.
