I think was their "great white hope" to reach the millenials. A youngish dude who sculpts his guns in the gym and listens to rage against the machine (and yet somehow not noticing their anti-corporate anti-authority anti-war message).  They thought if they could package trickle down economics and pro-life extremism in a hip new package that it might sell on the kids. Most under 40's just thought Paul Ryan was a douchebag. Obama connects with young people, not just because he listens to Jay-Z on his iPod, but because he reflects their spirit. I think Megan McCain is right. If Republicans don't want to die out with the baby boomers they need to end the culture war. If they are willing to surrender the centrality of their pro-life, anti-gay, anti-immigrant factions, they may have a chance at selling small government economically conservative views to the young. Ron Paul is the key to winning young folks to the Republican party, not Paul Ryan.  If you see the Republicans embrace marijuana legalization you may well see a good chunk of the youth vote go Republican.
