  •  This has been a big conversation for years (3+ / 0-)

within Sociological circles: how "white" someone is viewed by the status quo has, in fact, been very determined by prevailing social decisions, such as the decision post-WWII to "rebrand" Jewish people as "white." Previously, the same happened with "Italians" and "the Irish" who had not been considered white either.

When was the last time you saw "Italian" or "Irish" on a form asking ones' ethnicity?

And then, as with Italians, the Irish, and many Jews, we now do tend to check the box "White" on whatever form we are handed. So we, ourselves, assimilate the "privilege" of being white that we are handed.

    It's complicated.

As a Jewish woman who definitely looks white, I check "Other." I am not white and am proud of my heritage.

At some point, all of these categories really break down and become babble. Ultimately, only an individual can determine what his or her ethnic heritage is. No matter how much the status quo would like to have control over those particular boundaries and definitions for their gain.

Vote YES on Prop. 30, California!!!! Yes on 30, No on 32 & 38. For the future of education. (Oh look at that. Yes We Did!)
