"A Historic" is correct.  When the "h" consonant sound is pronounced, as in "historic", you use "a"; when the h is silent, as in "hour", you use "an".   (one of my pet peeves, sorry, "an historic" is like nails on a blackboard to me).

Regardless, congrats on your re-election, Sen Gillibrand,
and I'm looking forward to all of the new women senators kicking some serious butt in Congress.

but "a historic" is increasingly more common.  I wouldn't say either usage is "wrong," per se.

Congrats to Senator Gillibrand, as well.

Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.

    •  The way I say it... (0+ / 0-)

... The H is silent. It comes out sounding like "AN-is-TOR-ic." This, of the "an" FR is correct. For me and my kind, and anyway...
