  •  It gets worse if you look at a map of... (4+ / 0-)

Voting by county. THAT map is scary.

I'm afraid to say it shows that bigotry and ignorance are not just unique to ye olde Confederacy! It exists even in places as supposedly enlightened as California, Oregon, and Washington.

While I applaud our progress. This isn't something secession can fix =/

    •  Very Interesting .... (4+ / 0-)

Other than higher density populations (perhaps) in the smaller states of New England, this is a map that seems to distinguish urban centers from suburbia and rural areas.

I suppose that makes sense given the nature of President Obama's grand election coalition.

    •  Urban America prevailed. (4+ / 0-)

However impersonal city living may seem, people in urban areas learn to work together with people of all origin.

      This opens people's minds.

We need to open rural American's minds.

I think that young people communicating via social media will shrink the distance between both Americas.

not equal racist. Most (not all) racist may be Republicans, but the inverse is not true. If we stopped pushing that meme, I think our brand would do better.

is thoroughly infused with the blood of the old Dixiecrat, thanks the "Southern Strategy" crafted by the henchman of Strom Thurmond and Richard Nixon.

They have reaped exactly what they have sown ... and it's not a meme, it's a fact of history and of modern times.

not always equal racist. I'm sure many people, like my oldest older brother and my aunt, for instance, don't really hold racist feelings. But their actions, nonetheless, contribute to racism in America. Seriously, voting GOP, regardless of your ignorance or good intentions, has the same effect as outright bigotry.

More importantly, one can be racist without actually being hateful. Again, I reference those above family members, who don't hate any People of Color but nonetheless believe the hype about Blacks, Latinos, and other racial groups because they don't care enough to educate themselves. Or what about the apathetic GOP voters? The people who don't criticize the blatant racist dog whistles of their party? Or the well-documented discrimination in bank loans, housing, Obama's citizenship, and other issues, which are given carte blanche by casual Republicans?

Like I said, just because you mean well or are ignorant is no excuse for the consequences of your actions, particularly when those actions support openly racist, bigoted, and oppressive politicians.
