There was a right-wing conspiracy mill long before Fox News Channel aired its first broadcast in the US.

The Clinton-era pseudoscandals all predated Fox. Rupert was still tangentially involved via right-wing newspapers in the UK but the GOP scandal machine, aka: The Mighty Wurlitzer, was already up and running.

The Washington Times newspaper, American Spectator magazine, Jerry Falwell, Rush Limbaugh to name a few...there was a well-financed wingnut propaganda machine already there. Murdoch didn't invent it; he saw an opportunity and gave it a bigger megaphone.

I have lived with conspiracy theories all my life. One of the worst was McCarthyism, which bloomed (and failed) when I was young. I've been here all along, really. But I'd just like to say that Rupert has done a lot of damage by encouraging people who see conspiracies where there are none and making an organized and well-funded effort to have them succeed.

At least some members of the media fought back in the 50s, and now we finally have some trying to fight back in the 2012s, but we have a big gap between the educated and uneducated, and that is going to take a long time to fix.

BTW, I had your sig line posted on my office wall for years before I retired. Love it.

    •  A "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" as Hillary put it.. (0+ / 0-)

      ...and got mocked for it.

But of course she was right. "The Arkansas Project," Falwell's "Clinton Murders," The American Spectator digging up Paula Jones*....

The right wing worked like fking DOGS to make mountainous scandals out of molehills in the Clinton era.

Remember how Hillary killed Vince Foster? Remember the Travel Office NON-Scandal (when people were fired for cause and were pissed off about it)? Remember the Rose Law Firm records NON-Scandal (they were finally found and it was a terrible, terrible thing, because they showed nothing)? Remember how the Clinton's had some silly woman's dog killed in her back garden? Remember Whitewater, and how the Clinton's supposedly nefarious real-estate scheme ended with them LOSING money? Remember how Bill was running drugs out of the Mena Airport?

*Paula did want to be Bill's girlfriend, but she wasn't prepared for the immediate demands of the job (How does the song go: "I'll do anything for love, but I won't do THAT..."?).
