Well, sometimes generalizations persist because they contain a grain of truth.

According to a CNN exit poll, Romney got 61% and Obama got 39% of the vote of white voters over age 65. As a point of reference, that's almost identical to the election results for the state of Alabama: 61% Romney, 38% Obama.

In other words: White, 65+ = Alabama.

Arkansas is the only state in the former Confederacy where Obama got a smaller percentage of the vote, 37%. That kind of gives you some context for how conservative white older voters tend to be.

The fact Obama did get 39% of the white, 65+ vote does support your point that the stereotype in question doesn't fit too closely. That said, it's still fair to say that the people pictured are among the most conservative major demographic groups out there.

    •  That should have been a picture of white women (0+ / 0-)

if you don't want to ignore reality all together.

CNN's exit polls show that people 65 and over voted 44% for Obama.  They show that white women voted 42% for Obama.  I'm not sure which exit poll you were reading, but those numbers are from today's CNN.com page.

My subject line was actually somewhat snark, as I think that 44% and 42% represent whopping big numbers of people that shouldn't be generalized.  The picture should actually have been of a tea party rally, signs included.  That would have been a meaningful representation.

    •  Obama got 39% of the white vote, period. (0+ / 0-)

If that was his margin with older whites as well, I don't think we can draw any specific conclusions about the older folk.

Full disclosure, I'm not there yet (just 53), but I fully expect that I'll be voting for progressive Democrats as long as I live.

Until the economy recovers, I'll settle for cheap laughs
