    We've seen what decades of unchallenged doublespeak allows them to get away: having them pushed even further towards their extremes in public seems one of the better ways to minimize their public acceptance.

    One would hope that a side-effect is that they will become less enabled to hurt others in a sooner timeframe than if they go back to effective lying about their true intentions.

    Regardless, you won't find them backing down on these extreme positions: they once brought these issues up merely to garner the votes of religious leaders and their associated flocks, but now their fully vested in that wedge issue and clinging population.  I see no realistic situation where Republicans would suddenly find themselves backing off en masse to more moderate policy positions, because they consider this part of their bread-and-butter at a time of increasing weakness.
