  •  It's hard to judge the audience. Older folks (0+ / 0-)

remember LBJ as one of the good guys on race relations. But as a former high school history teacher, I know that the year usually ended before we got to the 1960s, so a lot of people born post-1960 don't know all of what LBJ stood for or simply see him as the guy who got us mired in Vietnam.

I find this forum quite educational for understanding the experiences of various generations of progressives, but miscommunication is also possible.

LBJ was such a complex character, so good/evil it's hard to sort him out.  He was the guy who made civil rights really happen--others talked, he delivered.

He also lied to get us into a quagmire in which almost 50,000 American lives were lost, and then could figure out how to end it decently.

He was the most accomplished election stealer, possibly of all time. If you want to learn about election fraud, read some of his biographies.

He was the most powerful man in Congress for a long time before he became president; this was accomplished by great charm and great cruelty.

So yes, his comment was probably honest--but when was he not manipulative?

      •  apparently he was also crass and crude (0+ / 0-)

used to make staff take dictation or meet with him while he was on the toilet, I kid you not.
such an odd one, he was.
