  •  What I think is going to happen is (5+ / 0-)

a Republican Civil War is going to take place, where the Old Guard (Limbaugh, Rove, Norquist) faces off against the New Guard (Whoever fills this role). From there you'll say hello to the Republican Party for the next while.

    •  I agree but we have no idea who that new guard is. (5+ / 0-)

And that makes me wonder (if not worry) that there are no voices to speak up and fill role. The problem they are going to have is dragging their base along with them.

The only way to do that is to do the very unpopular thing (among White Conservatives) and work with the President. Once they do that, if they can then pick up House and Senate Seats in 2014 as a direct result of this moderation, then the base might come to the conclusion that winning is good, and maybe these guys have the right idea.

But honestly I don't know of any Republican politician in the House or Senate (which is where this moderation has to happen) who would be willing to be this new voice at the risk of losing his/her seat in 2 years.

We lose if we choose to forget; the lives of men, and money spent.

They're likely to be facing losing their seat in 2 yrs anyway.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't. Sucks for them, but good for the people.

...as well as be involved in the Democratic Party in the Seventies and Eighties in two different states. Texas and Alaska, respectively.

I believe it was Will Rogers who said, "I'm not a member of any organized political party. I'm a Democrat." (I'm paraphrasing from memory)

This is the place in which I believe the Republic party finds itself. Disparate forces pulling in many directions. Ideology directing policy. And fighting the predominant culture.

That Republic Party is gone, as is Beaver Cleaver's America. No more fedoras and pipes and cigars with brandy while the "little woman" whips up something in the kitchen. She does pretty well despite being in the eighth-month of her 4th pregnancy in 5 years....

        My advice?

        Learn Spanish. I have.

Republican moderates (defined as any of them who refrain from baying at the moon) need to rebrand and form a Conservative Party.  They might even attract a few blue dogs.
