    It is estimated that the penalties under the Clean Water Act will be approximately 21 billion dollars more.

    Most importantly, by having to plead guilty to the criminal charges, BP is going to have a difficult time defending itself from the thousands of civil suits filed against them. The trial lawyers handling those cases have been waiting for this judgement. It will make their cases much easier to prove.

    And don't forget that Transocean, is going to undergo a similar process as regards their culpability in this disaster.

    This settlement will dwarf the Exxon Valdez settlement by a factor of ten.
