.. shouldn't be the distant future: Could ‘economic peak oil’ rival the banking crisis? - Last updated on 14 November 2012, 6:29 pm

Economic peak oil’ could cripple the world’s economies by 2014 according to a UK-based think tank report (pdf), which recommends governments take urgent action to wean their economies off fossil fuels.
    ..it should be now.
In its World Energy Outlook 2012, released yesterday, the International Energy Agency (IEA) revealed fossil fuel subsides increased 30% to $523 billion in 2011, hiding the threat of high oil prices.
    Subsidies are covering high prices:

The IEA also warned that only one-third of current proven fossil fuel reserves can be burned before the 2°C threshold of global warming is crossed – a warning to countries that they must leave these fuels in the ground.

Prepared countries would continue to prosper, but this will need political leadership driving this transition,

before we take credible actions to make a switch from fossil fuel. Instead of blowing up the Middle East, how about trying out ethanol, or other easy to make alternative domestic carbon neutral fuels.

There are some 50,000 vehicles out on the roads using converter kits (timing enhancement gizmos put in after inspection, taken out before, but none street legal), all that keeps them under the radar is intransigence, CARB won't grant exemptions, so that, one can actually test converted vehicles to see if they are lesser, or greater polluters (alcohol should burn cleaner than gasoline) using a potentially carbon neutral fuel, but, the mom and pop producers of the gizmos won't apply for them either (it's a friggin free application, only a few pages of drivel). It is a mole hill that holds it all up -- really feel for anyone who has suffered from wars in the Middle East, asthma, Katrina and Sandy.

Our flex fuel fleets have identical parts to their non-flex fuel kin, strange isn't it, perhaps, it is just in the electronics, and/or in our heads?

As mentioned above, it will take Peak Oil and another mega storm surge to penetrate our myoptic rationalizations for hanging on to fossil fuel.
